Friends of the late writer and feminist icon bell hooks gathered for a memorial on Thursday.

Feminist writer and activist Gloria Steinem recorded a video message for her friend’s memorial, describing how Yale students were fighting to get into her class back in 1992. 12 years later, bell came to teach at Berea College. President Lyle Roelofs was among the many friends that spoke in the Phelps Stokes Chapel on Thursday.

Steinem touched on her favorite books of bell’s, including “Ain’t I a Woman? Black Women and Feminism” and “All About Love: New Visions.”

bell hooks was inducted into the Kentucky Writers’ Hall of Fame in 2018. Berea College’s bell hooks center opened in 2021 and honors her legacy by supporting students as social justice leaders. Learn more at
