Open call for a mail art book project with the theme “Choose to love and move towards freedom”, inspired by the writing of bell hooks.

Deadline to receive the collages by mail in Brazil: Wednesday, 4 May 2022

Collage has always been one of the most used techniques for Mail Art. With the desire to encourage this practice, Brazilian visual artist Marcia Rosenbergerinvites everyone to participate in an open call to honor bell hooks (1952-2021). Recently deceased, bell hooks was the pseudonym of author, activist and teacher Gloria Jean Watkins, most notable for her writings on race, feminism, sexuality, love and community, in order to create a more just and equitable world. In the 60s and 70s, Mail Art was widespread among artists who, by sending their works by mail, diffused their production, created international networks and protested the political regimes of the time.

In celebration of World Collage Day 2022, Rosenberger has launched an open call for artists to send collages in postcard format (10x15cm/4″x6″), sent physically and digitally, with the theme “Choose to love and move towards freedom”, inspired the writings of bell hooks.

The deadline to receive the works is Wednesday, 4 May 2022.

The postcards must be sent by mail and also scanned and sent in high resolution. The postcards will be used to create the digital book Mail Art in the 21st Century, published by Rosenberger’s imprint, Loreley Books, and made available free of charge.

By submitting Mail Art to this project, artists should be aware that the publisher (Loreley Books) retains full rights over the image for reproduction, dissemination, exhibition, etc., always referencing and respecting the artist’s copyright. There is no fee for entry. The submitted works received will not be returned and will become part of the publisher’s collection, which will promote an in-person exhibition at a place and date to be announced. Works that are deemed offensive or prejudiced will not be accepted.
